Nuvio on an LG TV is possible, but it does not come from the LG Content Store. Nuvio LG TV support is a separate webOS build that you load yourself, and there are three ways to do it. This guide covers all three, tells you which one fits your TV, and shows how to fix the usual problems afterward.
Quick answer: if you have a PC or Mac and an LG TV from 2020 or newer, use the Nuvio TV Installer. If your TV is already rooted with Homebrew Channel, add the Nuvio repository and install it from the TV. If neither fits, install the IPK file through Developer Mode.
Nuvio LG TV App: What Works on webOS and Which TVs Are Supported
The Nuvio LG TV app is called Nuvio TV and is published by the Nuvio team on GitHub as open source software. The project lists support for LG webOS TVs from 2020 onward (webOS 5 and newer). Older LG sets are not supported. The current release at the time of writing is version 1.2.9, and the project ships updates often, so check the releases page for the latest file before you download anything.
A few limits to know before you start:
- Nuvio is a player. It does not include any content, so you still add your own addons after install (covered below).
- On webOS, torrent playback runs through a small service bundled inside the app. No separate torrent server is needed.
- webOS 5.x TVs have tighter resource limits for plugins than newer sets, so expect plugin-heavy setups to be less smooth on older models.
- This is not an app you find by searching the LG store. If you see a “Nuvio” listing there, it is not the one covered in this guide.
Nuvio LG TV Install Methods Compared
| Method | Needs | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Nuvio TV Installer | Windows, Mac or Linux PC on the same network, Developer Mode on the TV | Most people |
| Homebrew Channel repository | A TV already rooted with Homebrew Channel | Users who already run homebrew apps |
| Manual IPK | Developer Mode, Key Server and a PC with webOS Dev Manager | Anyone who wants full control of the file |
The installer and the IPK route both rely on LG’s own Developer Mode, so you do not need to root the TV. The Homebrew Channel route does need a rooted TV, and rooting depends on your exact firmware. Many recent firmware versions are patched, so treat that as the option for people who are already set up.
First: Turn On Developer Mode and Key Server on Your LG TV
Methods 1 and 3 both start here. Skip this section if you are using Homebrew Channel.
- Create a free LG developer account at the LG webOS developer site.
- On the TV, open the LG Content Store and install the Developer Mode app.
- Open Developer Mode and sign in with your LG developer account.
- Turn Dev Mode Status on. The TV restarts.
- Open the app again and turn Key Server on. Leave the app showing its screen while you install from your PC.
Developer Mode runs on a session timer of about 1,000 hours. When it runs out, sideloaded apps can disappear. Open the Developer Mode app and choose Extend every month or so to reset it. The Key Server setting can also switch itself off after a restart, so turn it back on if an install fails to connect.
The webOS Homebrew Project explains Developer Mode in detail at webosbrew.org/devmode.
How to Install Nuvio on LG Smart TV With the Nuvio TV Installer
The Nuvio TV Installer is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that pushes the TV build to your LG or Samsung set over your home network. It is the simplest route because it handles the packaging and signing for you.
- Finish the Developer Mode steps above, with the TV on the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network as your computer.
- Open the official Nuvio releases page on GitHub (NuvioMedia/NuvioTVSmart) and download the Nuvio TV Installer for your operating system.
- Open the installer and choose LG webOS as the platform.
- Select your TV, or enter its IP address if it asks. You can find the address under the TV’s network settings.
- Start the install and wait for it to finish. Nuvio TV then appears in your TV’s app list.
If the installer cannot reach the TV, the cause is almost always the Key Server being off, a different network on the PC and TV, or a VPN running on the computer. Fix those first.
How to Install Nuvio on LG webOS With Homebrew Channel (GitHub Repository)
If your TV already has Homebrew Channel, this is the quickest install because it all happens on the TV. Nuvio publishes a Homebrew repository for exactly this.
- Open Homebrew Channel on the TV and go to Settings.
- Choose Add repository.
- Enter this address exactly:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NuvioMedia/NuvioTVWebOS/main/webosbrew/apps.json - Go back to the app list, find Nuvio TV and choose Install.
The address is long to type with the Magic Remote’s on-screen keyboard, so go slowly and double check every character.
Homebrew Channel requires a rooted TV. Whether yours can be rooted depends on its model and firmware version, and rooting is unsupported by LG. Check your exact firmware at the CanI.RootMy.TV checker before you try anything, and do not update the firmware first. If the TV is not rootable, use method 1 or 3.
Install the Nuvio LG TV App With the IPK File (Developer Mode + Key Server)
The IPK is the raw webOS package. This route suits you if you would rather install the file yourself than use the installer app.
- Turn on Developer Mode and Key Server using the steps above.
- On your computer, install webOS Dev Manager from the webOS Homebrew project.
- Download the latest LG webOS
.ipkfile from the official Nuvio releases page on GitHub. - In Dev Manager, add your TV using its IP address and the passphrase shown by the Key Server screen in the Developer Mode app.
- Open the Apps section for that device, choose to install an IPK and select the Nuvio file you downloaded.
- When it finishes, launch Nuvio TV from the TV’s app list.
Only download the IPK from the official NuvioMedia GitHub account. Copies from random sites or file lockers can be modified, and an app you sideload has access to your home network.
How to Update Nuvio on Your LG TV
Updates do not arrive automatically on any of the three routes. With Homebrew Channel, open the app and update Nuvio TV when a newer version appears in the list. With the installer or IPK, download the newer file from the releases page and install it over the existing app. Your settings and profiles stay in your Nuvio account if you are signed in, so an update should not wipe your setup.
Set Up Nuvio After Installing It on Your LG Smart TV
A fresh install is an empty player. To get anything to play you need to add addons, which is the same process on every device. Follow our guide on how to add addons to Nuvio, and see the best Nuvio addons for the ones worth installing first.
If you also own a Fire TV or Android TV box, the Nuvio APK install guide for Firestick and Android TV covers those devices. Those devices install Nuvio as a normal app, so they skip the Developer Mode renewals the LG route needs.
Nuvio LG TV Not Working? Common Fixes
- Nuvio disappeared from the app list: the Developer Mode session probably expired. Turn it back on, extend the session and reinstall.
- Installer cannot find the TV: confirm Key Server is on, the PC and TV share a network and no VPN is running on the PC.
- Installs but will not open: check that your TV is a 2020 or newer model running webOS 5 or later.
- Stuck on a black screen or stutters: restart the TV, then reinstall the latest version. Older builds had startup and audio problems that later releases addressed.
- Opens but nothing plays: this is an addon problem, not an install problem. See our Nuvio not working fix guide.
Nuvio on Samsung Tizen TVs
The Nuvio TV Installer also supports Samsung TVs from 2018 onward (Tizen 4 and newer). Instead of an IPK, it uses a WGT package that it signs for your TV during install, and you turn on Developer Mode on the Samsung set rather than the LG one.
Tizen 4 TVs cannot play torrent streams at all, and Tizen 5 TVs have the plugin screen disabled, so Tizen 6 or newer gives the fullest experience.
Nuvio LG TV FAQ
Is there a Nuvio app for LG TV?
Yes. Nuvio TV is a webOS build for LG TVs from 2020 onward (webOS 5 and newer). It is not in the LG Content Store, so you install it with the Nuvio TV Installer, Homebrew Channel or the IPK file.
Do I need to root my LG TV to install Nuvio?
No. The Nuvio TV Installer and the IPK method only need LG’s Developer Mode and Key Server. Rooting is only needed for the Homebrew Channel method.
Where do I download Nuvio for LG webOS on GitHub?
Use the official NuvioMedia account on GitHub and open its releases page for the Nuvio TV project. The Homebrew repository address is https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NuvioMedia/NuvioTVWebOS/main/webosbrew/apps.json. Avoid copies from other sites.
Why did Nuvio disappear from my LG TV?
The Developer Mode session most likely expired. It lasts about 1,000 hours. Open the Developer Mode app, extend the session and reinstall Nuvio if it is gone.
Does Nuvio work on every LG webOS version?
No. The project lists LG TVs from 2020 onward (webOS 5 and newer). Older sets are not supported.
Does Nuvio work on Samsung smart TVs?
Yes, on Samsung TVs from 2018 onward (Tizen 4 and newer) through the same Nuvio TV Installer. Tizen 6 or newer gives the fullest feature set.
Why does Nuvio play nothing after I install it on my LG smart TV?
A new install has no addons. Add addons first, then check the Nuvio not working guide if streams still fail.
Final Thoughts on Installing Nuvio on an LG TV
For a Nuvio LG TV setup, the installer is the easiest route and Homebrew Channel is the easiest update path if your TV is rooted. Expect to renew Developer Mode now and then, and keep your downloads limited to the official NuvioMedia releases. Once it is installed, the next step is adding addons, so start with the links above. Use Nuvio only for content you have the right to access.
